Student Newspapers
Scope and Contents
The Sidney Silverman Library Archive collection of student newspapers contains copies from 1968 to the present. The earliest copy of the student newspaper in the collection is an issue of “The Monitor” from December 1968. There are several gaps in the collection, mainly in the late 1960s and early 1970s. There are multiple copies of many issues.

Biographical / Historical
“The Torch” is the student newspaper of Bergen Community College. Bergen Community College was founded in 1965, and the newspaper began publication in 1968. Since its inception, the newspaper has undergone several title changes. The student newspaper was first titled “The Monitor” until 1976 when it became “The Bergen Monitor,” retitled “The Monitor” in 1993, then back to “The Bergen Monitor” until 1995 when the newspaper’s name was changed to its present title, “The Torch.” The newspaper’s content is created and published by students under the supervision of a faculty advisor.
