Transformation of American Society, May 18 - September 18, unknown year

 Sub-Series

Abstract

From the program announcement: "The values and assumptions which the United States and indeed western civilization cherished for over three hundred years began to lose their dominance in the early part of the 20th century. Although much of the Old Culture lives on at various levels in our consciousness, we now live in the ruins of one era and the psychic uncertainty and physical turmoil of an age yet to come. While no one can predict the full implications of the emerging New Culture, it is the purpose of this television series to probe the transformation of American society in order to gain a better understanding of our recent national experience and future prospects. In order to provide a broad interdisciplinary approach to this multi-faceted topic, the viewpoints of distinguished historians, journalists, theologians, novelists, philosophers, anthropologists, archaeologists, political scientists, biologists, physicists, psychologists, military officers, college officials, public opinion experts and others will be presented. The series itself is divided into four sections, the first of which will explain the value structure of the Old Culture. The second section is designed to focus on those broad factors which helped undermine the culture, while the next section will deal with the actual impact of change on various levels of our society. The last section will attempt to analyze the unfolding future."
